Discover his heart and passion for rhino conservation, laugh at the humorous and intriguing story of his journey and be inspired by the example of how ordinary people can do extraordinary things, even if it means embracing the storm!

“In the pages of this very personal book, you’ll find out what courage, humour and true grit it took for Wayne and his family to complete this remarkable odyssey against all odds. You’ll also find inspiration for your own personal journeys of discovery and how you too, can leave a lasting legacy ‘for good’.”

Kingsley Holgate, Adventurer, Explorer and Humanitarian.

“I know Wayne as a devoted family man. He has a passion for life! He does not seek accolades but gets on with the business of trying to make a real difference on the ground – for the sake of conservation and our natural heritage. If we all had Wayne's passion and drive for the environment, I know this world would be a far better place.”

John Adendorff, Park Manager, Majete Wildlife Reserve, African Parks.

The Ride of a Lifetime
Wayne's book, The Ride of a Lifetime, chronicles one man’s commitment to a dream - to metaphorically link all the SanParks National Game Parks in South Africa by cycling to each region to encourage the rangers personally in their unrelenting battle against rhino poaching.

Wayne shared his dream of “joint custody” literally with his family. His wife, Nikki, and children, together with a friend, Wayne’s parents and Nikki’s father, toured the country in support, sharing the trials and learning along with Wayne that , “I cannot control everything, but I can try to control the way I react to it”.

The Ride spanned months during the hottest days of an African summer where the bicycle tyres on the melting tar road “made the sound of sellotape being stripped off the roll”. The challenges, both physical and psychological, took their toll, but the plight of the rhino in Africa, and the herculean efforts of the people tasked to protect them, are also unrelenting.

This book is far more than one man’s cycling expedition. It makes one realize the strength of families working together; the power of joint custody to save a species that is at risk of extinction; and the realization that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things…

Recommendation: The Ride of a Lifetime
The Ride of a Lifetime’, by Wayne Bolton, is an inspiring read no matter your walk of life. The book came about because of a passion for conservation and a desire to live a life that matters and makes a difference, and it all came to fruition on a bicycle ride of 6000kms. But you could be forgiven for asking, “What could be in it for me if I don’t like bikes. Or, what’s in it for me if I’m not sure about conservation?” Good question! Let me help you answer it.

If you’ve ever struggled with being stuck in the day-to-day grind of living in the rat-race and trying to stay inspired while keeping the wolves from the door, the lesson of finding the things that you are passionate about and doing something about them is for you. If you have ever come to a junction in your life where you have tried to remember what makes you tick and how your life can count beyond where you are today – in the legacy you leave behind for your own children and for the generations that follow you long after you are gone, then there’s plenty in the book for you. If you have looked at a challenge square on and doubted your capacity to do it, doubted your resilience to hold your line to the end of a task then Wayne’s daily physical and mental struggle in stroke after stroke of the pedal snatching up 6000kms of road one revolution at a time is a mirror in which you can find yourself reflecting, and growing.

Chapter 7 starts with a sub-heading that goes like this: ‘Where the mind leads, the body follows.’ And what follows in the book, page after page, rising and falling with the cadence of the literal and figurative ride of a lifetime, is a picture of determination and tenacity that rekindles the spark of adventure and makes it count for something. And it is all written in honest prose with our beautiful country as its backdrop.
Makes for great reading.

The Ride of a Lifetime
A well written, inspiring and thought provoking read. This book resonated with me on so many levels. Not only is it the narrative of an epic 6000km bicycle adventure, linking South Africa's national parks in a bid to raise conservation awareness, but it's also the story of an ordinary man with an extraordinary dream. In Wayne's words, 'If you see it and believe it, you can become it.' The measure of a good author is the ability to evoke a response in his or her audience and The Ride of a Lifetime does exactly that. There are some laugh out loud moments as Wayne recounts the funnier side of his expedition and at yet other times, you may find yourself sniffing back tears. This is a tale of perseverance, determination and most of all - heart. And more importantly, it's a testament to the power of believing that, with faith, all things are made possible.

Recommendation: The Ride of a Lifetime
Oh my gosh!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Ride of A Lifetime by Wayne Bolton...

What an incredible story, what an incredible feat.

I laughed, I cried, I felt inspired and motivated, I gasped, felt Wayne's despair at times and then chuckled again.

Wayne's writing style and storytelling style is amazing and the story flows beautifully and draws you (the reader) into his world while he battles uphill and in soaring temperatures - and often with his own mind during this story.

Reading about Wayne and his family's 6000km journey for rhino conservation that became so much more than simply an expedition is just marvelous. It is uplifting to read how an ordinary family from my hometown managed to do the seemingly impossible.

Yes it is about rhinos, but it is also about overcoming your fears, dealing with your setbacks and reaching deeper, higher and further than you ever thought you could.

I LOVE how this family pulled together and made a difference with this journey that inevitably changed the course of their lives. What makes it even more special is that I know them and I can see the people they became because of this journey.

Unbelievable, incredible, beautiful and powerful! Everybody should read this amazing story! I loved it Wayne!!!

Review: The Ride of a Lifetime
Wayne, I just finished reading your amazing book. I found it very thought provoking. It really touched my emotions.

What an absolutely incredible achievement and what an incredible family you have. I had some laughs and at times, it brought tears to my eyes. I'm now passing it on to my daughter when she arrives this week for her and her husband, also an avid cyclist, to read.

How you managed to keep it all together must be such a sense of personal achievement, against all sorts of odds. Well done and I hope you are busy with a book on your next trip, I think you said it was to Mozambique!

The Ride of a Lifetime
“THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME”,
I didn’t quite know what to expect from this book when I started reading it, being quite involved with the project from the start.
What a surprise though! This is a book that draws you into the dreams, the planning, the hardships, the real struggles and eventually the faith in their Creator. You become part of the family, understanding the challenges they were faced with on a daily basis for 8 weeks, both physically, but also mentally. The incredible perseverance in continuing every day, riding more than a 100 kilometres per day in scorching heat on the most challenging roads in our country and on the other hand, balancing the intricacies of keeping a family business going while the family is away for 8 weeks.

It’s an easy to read book, difficult to put down. You find yourself continuously wanting to find out whether he is going to make it to the next destination.

One does not go through a journey like this in life without it having a lasting effect on you and this was no exception. I have enjoyed the way in which Wayne effortlessly managed to tie in the many lessons he has learned on the road, into everyday life.

This is a read that will definitely not leave the reader unchanged. Therefor, a MUST read!

Exhilarating, inspiring – a must read.
I bought the book firstly because Wayne is a friend and a former colleague, I felt I needed to support him in his debut into the literary world but secondly, I was intrigued to journey with him on this 6,000km mountain bike adventure he had undertaken.

Wayne wanted to stretch himself with a huge challenge in mid-life but by linking it to a cause way bigger than his personal challenge put the pressure firmly on him in that he knew he now couldn’t afford to fail as his daily progress was being watched and monitored by the media, sponsors, and the employees of SANParks around the country. The challenge was enhanced by the fact that he was unfit and had never cycled such a distance before and he would also have to try and run his business remotely for the two months the expedition was on the road and away from home and the office.

The cause was conservation, specifically the plight of the rhino which is facing the threat of possible extinction. He wanted to raise awareness among people in South Africa to apply pressure to stop the killing at the same time showing SANParks staff that he, his family and the South African people were with them and appreciated their efforts. He felt he could do this by symbolically linking all 19 South African National Parks – something that had never been done before.

Wayne takes you on his daily journey where he cycles an average of 100kms per day over 2 months hugely supported daily by his wife and family as there were no funds for a professional support team to follow him. You feel his daily pressures, emotions, highs, and lows in each page as he must dig deep each day to complete this mammoth challenge which ultimately ends in triumph as he crosses the finishing line in his hometown SANPark Addo Elephant National Park.

Once I had started reading, I was pulled into Wayne’s and his family’s journey and couldn’t put the book down until I had completed reading it.

A great and compelling read showing what can be achieved once you have put your mind to it. “Where the mind leads the body follows.” A personal triumph for Wayne but more importantly an international triumph in drawing increased attention to the plight of the rhino.

Inspirational - Think again you can make a difference
“If you think it is too late to do something meaningful with your life, then think again. Have a read of this book and find inspiration to be brave and change your life in pursuit of making a difference.

Wayne takes you on an inspirational journey of discovery of both himself and South Africa, as he moves from “caring to doing” for something very real, in support of his passion for a conservation cause worth committing to.

Learn about his family and his wonderful wife Nikki. You will feel like you are sitting down around a camp fire with Wayne as he personally tells you the story of the ups and downs (literally) of what it is really like to ride 6000km on a bicycle in 80 days.

My favourite quote from the book and there are many. “The interesting thing about people is that very few are “ordinary” at all." (from "The Ride of a Lifetime" by Wayne Bolton)”

Simply put, A most enjoyable, inspirational read.

A life changing story
The Ride of a Lifetime has inspired me to take a look at my own life and realize that one does not have to stay at one place in your life forever. I ordered the book because I love the Kruger and cycling and I feel very strongly about conservation. But in the end I got so much more. I read it at a time when I had to take decisions about my future and this book inspired me to decide that it is time for a change and do something else. The reference to 2 Tim1:7 was so special to me because it has always been a special verse in the Bible to me.

As a cyclist I could relate to the pain and suffering on a mountain bike but Wayne took it to another level. Every time he arrived at another one of our beautiful parks I was in tears and I could feel the emotion in the book from Pafuri in the beautiful Limpopo where I stay, up to Addo in Eastern Cape where a piece of my heart is.

The book has so many inspirational quotations and moments in many different formats I want to read it again but this time I will not rush through the pages to reach the next park. It has also has it's light moments where I just started laughing with Wayne and his family. The feeling of "Ubuntu" in the book made me feel proud to be a South African despite all our challenges

Thank You Wayne Bolton for sharing this wonderful journey with you and your preciously family. All that is left to say is... When is the last time you did something in your life for the first time?
